Ledbury Places Background

Ledbury & District Civic Society joined with Ledbury Town Council, Herefordshire Council, the Trustees of the Barrett Browning Institute (the current location of the Library) and the Ledbury Area Development Trust to work together to find a sustainable future for six buildings that make up a huge part of the heritage of Ledbury:

  • Barrett Browning Institute
  • Burgage Hall
  • Butcher Row House Museum
  • Heritage Centre
  • Market House
  • Town Council Offices (including the Painted Room).

This group and the project is called Ledbury Places.

The group appointed a consultant team to work with them and other potential stakeholders to develop a coordinated future plan for these core heritage buildings and which contributes to the well-being of the centre of Ledbury and the life of its community.

Grant funding

Ledbury Places obtained substantial grant funding from the Social Investment Business Group for a feasibility study, which tested the proposal.

Our project is seen as a national exemplar for community-led regeneration by the Department for Communities and Local Government.

Project stages

  • Phase 1 – Business Case Production
    • this was completed on 31 July 2013
  • Phase 2 – Information Gathering & Options Appraisal
    • this phase was completed in January 2014; you read more about it below
  • Phase 3 – Final Recommendations & Report
    • this is due on 31 January 2014; you read more about it below.

We will update this website as the project progresses.

Phase 2 – Information Gathering & Options Appraisal

The architects Purcell developed a series of consultation boards, which set out:

  • our objectives
  • our future tasks
  • our challenges
  • the options that are emerging
  • how you can help.

During November and December 2013 and January 2014, we asked people for their opinion on these proposals using a questionnaire. The results were used to inform the use options. We canvassed opinion on these use options in February 2014.

Phase 3 – Final Recommendations & Report

Using the responses received as part of Phase 2, Ledbury Places has drawn up a business plan which can be submitted to various organisations, such as the Heritage Lottery and Architectural Heritage Fund, as an application for funding to take the project to the next stage.

We will report on the progress of these applications via this website. In the meantime, you can find out more about the options put forward in Business Plan.
